Plants and animals

Commonly sampled plants and animals in the Gladstone Harbour and surrounding marine and estuarine systems include:


  • ​Aquatic freshwater macroinvertebrates
  • Zooplankton including copepods, rotifers, protozoa.
  • Molluscs mainly gastropods.


  • Mangroves
  • Benthic algae.
  • Phytoplankton mainly diatoms with occurrences of dinoflagellates.
  • Seagrass.


There are also the possibility​ of seeing a range of other animals while out on the water including:

  •  crabs, fish, crocodiles, sharks, jellyfish, prawns, dolphins, turtles, dugong, wader birds and sea birds.
