Harbour Watch and the Australian Curriculum

The Harbour Watch program aligns with the Australian Curriculum in a variety of ways.

The nature of the program inherently aligns with science and geography meeting many content descriptors within these disciplines with general capabilities being fundamentally embedded in the program. The cross-curriculum link of sustainability naturally appears in our programs.

As Harbour Watch programs are tailor-made to meet the needs of your students, it can be accessed to support many different key learning areas such as english, mathematics, outdoor education, technology, the arts and cross curricula links.

Examples

Mathematics

  • Primary and secondary data can be gathered by students for statistics.
  • Trends and patterns in water quality are examined over time.

English

  • Narratives about the health of local waterways
  • Debate over health of waterways
  • Points of view of published and sponsored media stories

Outdoor education

  • Becoming proficient in canoeing to gather water samples

Technology

  • Correct use of data loggers, microscopes and spectrophotometers
  • Designing a piece of equipment to assist in keeping waterways healthy

The arts

  • Using visual and media arts to promote a message regarding the health of a waterway.

Science

The Harbour Watch programs inherently meet the Australian Curriculum at all Year levels for 2 of the science strands through:

  • science as a human endeavour
  • science inquiry skills
  • science understanding (can be tailored to your Year level needs).

HASS and High School Geography

The Harbour Watch programs inherently meets the Australian Curriculum at all Year levels for:

  • geographical inquiry and skills
  • geographical knowledge and understanding (can be tailored to your year level needs).
